Three Major Categories of Computer Software

A software is a computer program or a set of instructions that are designed to perform various actions within less time and with less human efforts. They process the information stored on the computer and generate output. Software needs to be stored or installed on the computer to work.

There are different types of software that are designed to perform various operations. But, software are broadly classified into three major categories. They are system software, application software and programming software. In this article, we discuss them briefly along with a few examples.

System software
System software is often called as low-level programs as its interaction with the user is at very basic level. The basic function of the system software is to start up the computer device. System software also makes hardware of the computer device to start and operate. It enables applications installed on the system to activate and work according to users' instructions. In simple, it acts as a bridge between the hardware and application software.

Examples of system software are operating systems, compilers and loaders.

Application software
It is also called as application packages. Application software is also a computer program or a set of instructions that process the information and delivers the output that end user requires. There are hundreds and thousands of application software because there are hundreds and thousands of jobs that user wants to perform on the computer. Application software can be a simple game or a complex program that performs business operations.

Applications software can be customized. Developers are available in the market who can develop an application software according to your requirements and specifications. It does not require specific skill to work on an application, but an understanding of how an application can work.

Examples of application software are word processors, electronic spreadsheets, database management software, business applications, games, etc.

Programming software
Programming software is also called as software development tool or programming language. Programming software have predefined syntax and keywords that are used to design, develop and maintain applications of a computer. Programming software is a set of instructions or group of software programs.

Programming software is used to develop an application, rectify mistakes if any in the application, test whether the software is processing the information, generate the required output, maintain the developed program in the future with modifications and adding updates to the program.

An ordinary user needs training to understand and develop an application using programming language.

Examples of programming software are C programming language, Java programming language, etc.

These are the three major categories of computer software that are helpful for your business in many ways.
