Three Major Categories of Computer Software

A software is a computer program or a set of instructions that are designed to perform various actions within less time and with less human efforts. They process the information stored on the computer and generate output. Software needs to be stored or installed on the computer to work.

There are different types of software that are designed to perform various operations. But, software are broadly classified into three major categories. They are system software, application software and programming software. In this article, we discuss them briefly along with a few examples.

System software
System software is often called as low-level programs as its interaction with the user is at very basic level. The basic function of the system software is to start up the computer device. System software also makes hardware of the computer device to start and operate. It enables applications installed on the system to activate and work according to users' instructions. In simple, it acts as a bridge between the hardware and application software.

Examples of system software are operating systems, compilers and loaders.

Application software
It is also called as application packages. Application software is also a computer program or a set of instructions that process the information and delivers the output that end user requires. There are hundreds and thousands of application software because there are hundreds and thousands of jobs that user wants to perform on the computer. Application software can be a simple game or a complex program that performs business operations.

Applications software can be customized. Developers are available in the market who can develop an application software according to your requirements and specifications. It does not require specific skill to work on an application, but an understanding of how an application can work.

Examples of application software are word processors, electronic spreadsheets, database management software, business applications, games, etc.

Programming software
Programming software is also called as software development tool or programming language. Programming software have predefined syntax and keywords that are used to design, develop and maintain applications of a computer. Programming software is a set of instructions or group of software programs.

Programming software is used to develop an application, rectify mistakes if any in the application, test whether the software is processing the information, generate the required output, maintain the developed program in the future with modifications and adding updates to the program.

An ordinary user needs training to understand and develop an application using programming language.

Examples of programming software are C programming language, Java programming language, etc.

These are the three major categories of computer software that are helpful for your business in many ways.

Enterprise software

Enterprise software is the most important component of all three because it is one that performs major functions crucial to the operations of the business. There are many subsystems within enterprise software. The four major subsystems of enterprise software are:
  • Enterprise resource planning (ERP) – It is a combination of various software modules. ERP coordinates among all parts of enterprise software, and helps organization in performing operations quickly and efficiently.
  • Supply chain management (SCM) – SCM is responsible for producing, storing and supplying the products. It keeps track of inventory and flow of products from organization to customers.
  • Customer relationship management (CRM) – CRM describes business and customer relationship. It helps businesses get new customers and retains old customers.
  • Business intelligence (BI) – It is a method of organizing raw data to meaningful form and studying the past and present, and predicting future of the business.
Enterprise database
  • Organization may contain huge amount of data including sharable data, confidential data, resources and business logic.
  • Enterprise data is divided into internal (used within organization) and external (used outside the business also) categories of data based on organizational requirements.
  • Enterprise database is critical part of an enterprise. Therefore, it should be maintained well.
  • Enterprise data should have following characteristics:
    • Scalable – Enterprise data must be flexible and scalable to facilitate frequent changes and requirements that occur in an organization.
    • Secured – As enterprise data include critical information, they should be managed through authorized and controlled access.
    • Quality – Enterprise data has to follow organizational standards. Enterprise data should be free from error, and there should not be duplication of data.
    • Integrated – Enterprise data must be same and consistent across users and systems who use it.
Enterprise network
  • Enterprise networking is the backbone of an organization. It connects all the computers and other devices irrespective of their environment across the organization and outside the organization (if required).
  • Enterprise network may consists of computers with different operating systems, other electronic devices like printers, scanners, mainframe systems, smartphones, tablets, etc.
  • It enables communication among devices, and makes it easier for them to share information, resources and retrieve required information that is on the server or on other enterprise computer.
  • Enterprise network increases the performance of the business by enabling communication among all the systems and provides security to them.
  • It also eliminates the unwanted, inactive or isolated users in the network.
  • Enterprise network sometimes may be a group of LANs (local area networks) or WANs (Wide area networks) depending on the requirements of an organization.
These are the three important components of the enterprise computing. They should be maintained well for proper functioning and growth of the business/enterprise.

What is Business Software?

It is a software program that helps businesses/companies of all sizes to measure, increase their productivity, reduce the cost and to facilitate the organizations operations. It can be easily installed in PCs and laptops based on the requirement of a business.

Business software programs are mostly used by IT companies to make their work more efficient and to optimize their processes in both internally and externally.

This is basically split into two categories one is business or system software that supports the daily activities of the company and the other one is application software that supports the managerial decision making process.

Here are some most important types of business software, ie: BIS – Business Intelligence Software, CRM - Customer Relationship Management Software, ERP – Enterprise Resource Planning Software, and KMS – Knowledge Management Software, PLC – Product Life Cycle Management, BPS – Business Process Management, etc.

So, whether you have a small, mid-sized or large business, you need to install the software according to your business needs, so that your office will run smoothly and it will also become more productive, which can increase your profit margin. Business Software is used to increase revenue and to reduce costs. So to reduce the cost and increase the productivity of your business you need to install some form of Business Software based on your company needs.

What is an Application Software?

Application software, also referred as app or application, is the name given to the group of programs that perform specific tasks for users. It is a computer software designed to carryout specific tasks by the users.

These programs are classified into two groups: system software and application software. System software is a set of low-level programs that most deal with computers at a basic level for interacting, whereas application software exists on above the system software and includes  instant messengers, word processors, database programs, spreadsheets, games, anti-virus programs etc. Sometimes application software exists along with system software.

Application software is based on customer requirements. Examples of this are: Quicken and Quick books for financial applications and Word, Excel, Power-point for office applications, graphics software and media players. However, many application programs deal principally with documents. Software’s such as video drivers, browsers, games are not considered as applications.

Application software is successive with system software and middle-ware, that come through computer's capabilities, but that indirectly benefit the user. Here the function of system software is to serve the user via the application.

Application software uses different computing platform to serve various purposes. For some software applications, versions are available to install in various different platforms; others have smaller requirements. Example, for Windows – geography application, for education - Android application or Linux gaming. Sometimes a new application arises which runs only in one operating system or platform. This is called a killer application.

How to Choose the Best Business Software?

Different Parts of Enterprise Software

Having an enterprise software for a business is very useful. This is because, it is exclusively designed to perform the operations of the business, the accuracy and speed is fast in business operations.

Enterprise software consists of four major subsystems. They are:

1. Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
  • Customer relationship management (CRM) is a method of keeping in contact with the customers.
  • Competition in market is so high that it is important for a business not to lose the customers.
  • It is important for any business to have customers and provide good service to the customers.
  • CRM not only deals with the present clients or customers of the business but also with the people who are willing to become the customers (future customers).
  • CRM software stores all the information related to the customers like their names, contact numbers, their times of availability etc.
  • CRM system is also useful in promoting the new products to the customers which is an effective way of marketing.
  • CRM system also provides services to customers through calls, chats and emails.
  • In recent times, companies are setting up the social networking sites for their customers, where it can get feedback from the customers and improve their service to achieve good rankings in the market.

2. Supply Chain Management (SCM)
  • It is essential for a business to supply their products. Making this known as SCM is essential to the business.
  • Operations of the SCM includes the links among the network, list of the customers, suppliers and distributors, inventory, supply etc.
  • It deals with all people starting from the suppliers of the raw materials to produce goods to the customers who are using the finished products.
  • This system also keep track of the mode of transportation for the client locations which will be quick.
  • SCM also handles the warehousing activities. This is also one of the important factor for the business. Warehousing is the intermediate level between the organization and the customer.

3. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
  • Among all the four subsystems, ERP is the most crucial and very important system of the enterprise software.
  • It integrates all other systems of the enterprise software for better work flow.
  • Some small and medium sized companies who cannot afford the software for their business adopt the ERP as it a key system and later integrate additional systems later.
  • ERP makes all the computer systems working for the same business to work together which helps to improve productivity and reduces cost to the business.
  • It is easy to manage.

4. Business Intelligence (BI)
  • BI is like a decision-maker of the business/organization.
  • BI is a group of technologies, processes and methodologies which helps process the raw data of the business.
  • It generates reports using the data of the business to analyze the past, present and predict future of the business.
  • This helps the business to make changes in the operations which helps them develop and stand strong in the competition of the market.
  • Earlier BI system was complex, expensive and hard to instal and only large organizations could afford. Now it has been simplified and available to all sizes of companies.

These four parts of enterprise software cover almost all the areas of the business. Thus, for small and medium sized businesses, enterprise software plays a major role in the development of business.

Characteristics of Enterprise Software

Enterprise software is also known as 'enterprise system.' Enterprise system is the software capable of performing every functionality of the business. Each functionality is handled by a subsystem of the enterprise software. Hence, it can be referred to as a package of subsystems. Some of the characteristics of this package are as follows.

Nature of the software
Enterprise software is developed outside the business by other party (software developing team). It is designed according to the requirements specified by the business to the developing team. Thus, the nature of this enterprise software depends on the business. It has to work according to the needs of business. It might be necessary to share this software with others outside the business or make it unavailable to some people within the business. Here the nature of the software is changing.

The users of this software are trained on how to use it through the interface. They are unaware about the internal coding and how it actually works. Therefore, it might be tough for the users to understand the nature of the software.

Timely changes
Enterprise software is designed as per the requirements of the business at the time of development. It is very likely that the business functioning changes often. The functioning of the business varies depending on the market trend, added functionalities, competition from other businesses and loss/profits of the business. In such scenario, there is a strong need to modify the enterprise software.

The changes in the business software are very important with the change in the functionality of the business. This is because the changes affect the business. Frequent updating of the software yields good results and helps improve business's efficiency.

Some situations where changes in the software required are
  • Changes in the business database
  • Adding or removing an internal organization with the businesses
  • Collaborating with other businesses, etc.

Integrating new technologies
Enterprise software is a group of computer programs coded using some computer programming language or utility tools. Thus, knowingly or unknowingly the business or organization is using the technology.

It is quite common in the technical market that the technologies always change. It is more likely that the programming language or the utility/development tools used to develop the enterprise software also change. Then, the business organizations should update technology they are using. This could become a difficult task for the businesses to do it on their own. In a situation like that, they could contact the developers of the software who have thorough knowledge of the software to complete the task.

Sometimes it may be necessary to install the new technologies or software s to support the existing software. Otherwise there is a danger of software malfunctioning which may cause damage to the business.

It may also be the case with the hardware devices the business uses. For example, let us assume that a particular business has expanded considerably in a period. The data or the records will increase in number and the storage space allocated to the software by the organization may not accommodate all the data. Then, they have to increase the storage capacity.

Vitamins and Yoga for Bone Health

Most of us take intense care of our health of vital organs of our body, but when it comes to bones, many of us tend to ignore. In fact, bones play a major role in growth and development of the body. Weak bones are often vulnerable to fractures. People may also suffer from osteoporosis, a condition in which bones break quite easily. Therefore, to prevent all these, one needs to take enough care about his bone health. In this blog we are going to discuss two effective methods that could help get healthy and strong bones.

Vitamins & Minerals for bone health: Calcium is the important mineral which helps in building bones. Periodically our body removes and replaces small amounts of calcium from bones. If the removed calcium is much higher than the replaced calcium your body suffers from a lack of calcium resulting in weakened bones. This condition can be avoided by taking sufficient amounts of calcium during the early childhood. Calcium can be taken only till 18 years and after that the body stops accumulating the calcium and start using the deposited amount. So, the higher your intake during this period the greater benefits and stronger bones you get. On the other hand vitamins like A, B12, C, K, and D are also important for bone health.

You can get your regular quota of calcium from food sources like fat free or low fat milk, other dairy products, dark green, leafy vegetables like spinach, broccoli, and in fruits like oranges and whole wheat products. Vitamin A is found in liver, beef, chicken, egg, dairy products, etc. Fish, oranges, soy milk and cereals are good sources of other vitamins. In case of young children and older adults, if the food they take is not providing enough vitamins, doctors may prescribe vitamin supplements to cater to the vitamin and mineral needs of the body. When prescribed they should be taken regularly to avoid vitamin deficiencies and weak bones.

Yoga for healthy bones: Food and other sources provide the body with required nutrients which help the growth and development of bones. But to make them much stronger and resistant to minor attacks some or the other form of physical activity is required that boost the health of the bones. Yoga, when practiced regularly gives awesome benefits in the long run.

Different yogic postures make the bones stronger and flexible. The weight bearing poses show a positive effect on the bone health. Yoga also helps in increasing bone mass. The physical movements involved in Yoga renew and repair the bones in a much natural way. Yoga expands the bones and lengthens the areas with much practice. Special yoga classes are also conducted to treat disorders like osteoporosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Either it is supplying the body with required vitamins from foods or supplements or makes it flexible and much stronger using yoga, always remember to practice it regularly to get positive results.
