Statistics Of Teenage Smoking: Monitoring The Future Survey

Teen smoking has been widely used during the years 1996 and 1997. And afterwards it started declining year to year according to the study made by monitoring the future. From the past two years smoking rate among the youth got decreased gradually. The students who used to smoke during the past years had reduced their smoking rate.

According to the study made by MTF in 2009, 20% of the high school seniors have smoked in the recent months and every one in nine is a daily smoker i.e. 11%. Even according to the study light smokers got converted into heavy smokers after completing their high schooling.

There is a progress in reduction of the teenage smoking from 1996 to 2009. Among 8th graders the percentage of smoking is being dropped by two- thirds i.e. from 21%in 1996 to 7% by 2009. Even there is decrement in the percentage among 10th graders from 30% to 13%. Among 12th graders there is a decrease from 37% in 1997 to 20% by 2009.

Smoking initiates have been declined gradually because of this reason smoking rate has been decreased. Improvements in the decrement rate are being done at a very slow rate. The existence of the smoking among teens in 30 days before the survey has fallen just to 0.6, 0.9, 1.5 percentage points for 8th , 10th, 12th grades respectively.

There is a huge decline in the 8th graders from 77% in 1996 to 56% in 2007 and remained in 2009. But the case is different with the smokeless tobacco the usage has been increased from the past three to four years.

One should understand that these statistics are not mere numbers, they are actual facts. Here we discussed about the teenagers who are the future of our country. So, it is very important for us to understand these numbers and make our kids free from smoking.
